Sinus Grafting or Elevation

Sinus Grafting

The sinus is an air space connected to the nasal passages that are located above the bony ridge in the back part of the upper jaw. Modification and grafting of this area are often needed to place dental implants.

Sinus grafting is a surgical procedure done in conjunction with dental implants in the upper back part of the jaw. The sinus is an air space connected to the nasal passages that are located above the bony ridge where the upper back teeth used to exist prior to extraction.  Due to the tooth loss and likely infection or periodontal destruction and disease, the amount of bone in this area can shrink dramatically and not allow the simple placement of dental implants.  This scenario requires the additional bone grafting to delicately add more bony volume to the floor of the sinus.

The sinus cavity is never entered in this procedure, and special technique actually tucks the grafting materials under the sinus floor allowing the increase in bone for future implants.

There are a few variations of the of sinus lift procedures.  The graft maturing usually requires between 4-6 months.  Dr. Augustine will discuss your options prior to the procedure.
